We will discuss some of these in greater detail during Unit 4 on psychotherapeutic drugs, but, for this chapter, we will focus on barbiturates. Other types of drugs have sedative effects through action on the GABA receptor, such as γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), another drug we will be covering in this chapter. These medications are prescribed in the form of a pill, capsule, or liquid that you take orally. They work by increasing your brain’s production of a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Promoting healthy practices, such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and stress management, can help individuals manage symptoms and reduce the risk of relapse. CNS depressants are substances that can slow down your central nervous system. There may be severe adverse reactions and possibly life-threatening consequences. Sexual and violent crime are other areas where people are known to misuse CNS depressants. The sedative Xyrem, known as the “date rape drug,” commonly features in cases of sexual assault. In this study, we used qRT-PCR and Western blot to assess circadian variations of BDNF in the striatum. In the sham group, BDNF mRNA levels exhibited a rhythmic pattern, increasing at night and decreasing during the day. They can help manage conditions like anxiety, insomnia, and seizure disorders. However, misuse of these drugs can lead to serious health risks, including respiratory depression and overdose.
